Yet, it has a light hand, not preachy but breezy while sensitively making modern points.<br /> <br /> Family scenes - Kamal sourly taunting Neelam's weight, Kabir silently supporting Ayesha, Neelam weepily bingeing on chocolate, Kamal tackling bills with pills - are little gems, capturing the daily friction, the deep hurt, the bonds and binds families represent.<br /> <br /> Performances impact - Anil Kapoor is terrific as dominating, steel-haired, stressed-out Kamal, Shefali as stiff Neelam, whose coldness to her daughter chills a Turkish hamaam, whose plasticky response to her son's worries is, "Awww, cheese toast banwayun?" It's rare for expectations to be smashed to smithereens and even rarer for a Bollywood film to do this with so much confidence. Shoojit Sircar's Piku has arrived smack in the twilight of the blue moon. This film features the best ending to a Bollywood movie in a long time, and the stuff that happens prior to it is also quite lovely too.<br /> <br /> So here we have Piku Banerjee (Deepika Padukone), a Bengali architect who lives in Delhi with her dad, Bhashkor (Big B). Pappy is a raging hypochondriac and perpetually constipated, and also, naturally, highly irritable. Everything in his life, and also somehow everything in the life of people around him, depends upon his bowel movements (or the lack thereof). It doesn't take much for his antics to drive people insane. So it becomes a task when Bhaskor plans to travel from Delhi to his native Kolkata, and naturally Pappy declares traveling by flight could be problematic for his bowel.<br /> <br /> <b>(Also Read: <a href="http://rikknives.blogspot.in/2015/05/googles-next-version-android-m-will-be.html" target="_blank">Google’s next version "Android M" will be Launched this month </a>)</b><br /> <br /> The solution? Piku has to accompany Pappy on a cross-country road trip, along with Rana, a cab company owner turned driver (Irrfan), Pappy's Pot and Potty assistant Budhan (Balendra Singh), and even a throne-like pot seat.<br /> <br /> It's incredibly easy to dig this movie at the onset, not just because of fun performances from Padukone, Bachchan and Irrfan, but because it's so darn easy to relate to it. There is a Bhashkor in every family – the stubborn, grumpy old man with the temper of a child and a heart of gold. And Big B portrays the character to perfection - he's a well-meaning chap, just a bit forward in his manner and cranky owing to his illness. His utter lack of empathy for those on the wrong end of his forwardness is hilarious, as is his unreserved innocence regarding his prickly nature. The film explores interesting themes – what does one do when the parent becomes difficult to handle and is totally dependent on you? How does one react when the parent is clearly upset about no longer being able to be independent, and becomes passive aggressive to assuage his frustration? Where does one draw a line between the parent being merely difficult and being a burden? How much can you sacrifice to make a relatively thankless invalid parent happy? Is it noble to consider moving out of the house and giving your invalid parent in the care of someone else so that you can focus on your career and social life? What can the parent do if he thinks he's being a burden to his children? Piku doesn't have the answer to all these questions, but it is bold enough to take you through them and make you ponder.<br /> <br /> The film also makes the best case for women empowerment since Queen. In the film, Piku is single, but has a casual sex life, and this fact is established very subtly. It is not a 'character trait'. It's just another normal thing that this normal girl does. And to top it all, even her father is liberal enough to not make a fuss over that. He expresses the occasional well-meaning concern, but he's not the regressive honour killer that is so prevalent in both in and outside our cinema. When was the last time you saw a Bollywood film where the father suggests to his daughter that getting married soon is only for those with low IQ? Last I checked, Sonakshi Sinha wanted to be 'blessed for marriage' by seeing Ajay Devgn's schlong. In this film, the Bechdel Test is effortlessly kicked in the nuts in a terrific 'will they won't they' scene between Piku and Rana that warrants a huge applause for both Chaturvedi and Sircar.<br /> <br /> Most importantly, Piku glides over all of these heavy-duty themes with breezy lightness and consistent, well-timed comedy. This is a road trip movie after all, and it's got hysterical, rapid-fire montage of cuts of the back and forth between the trio of Piku, Bhaskkor and Rana. The teeny bit of melodrama is handled beautifully by shuffling laughs and tears together like a pack of cards, making Piku one of the more emotionally honest films to have come from the industry.<br /> <br /> ref: firstpost.com</div>

Cristofori's most recognizable piano dates later, to 1720. The biggest problem was that it couldn't play notes with differing degrees of softness. To play a note, a tiny device called a plectrum plucked a string, and the note played. But the piano took one big step beyond that instrument by using a hammer instead of plucking a string. That allowed for a better modulation of volume thanks to its hammers and dampers, which could more artfully manipulate sound than the plucking motion of the harpsichord.<br /> <br /> The earliest surviving piano is from 1721, and it's clear it was a transitional instrument: there are hints of the harpsichord in its sound. As the Metropolitan Museum of Art notes, it had a narrower range, thinner strings, and harder hammers than modern pianos, which are part of the reason it sounds a bit like a harpsichord.<br /> <br /> But even then, it's obvious why the piano changed music forever.<br /> Soon, the piano got its name. Cristofori also referred to his invention as "un cimbalo di cipresso di piano e forte" (a keyboard of cypress with soft and loud), and over time it was shortened to piano forte, and eventually just piano.<br /> <br /> It's rare that such an old instrument has so clear an inventor and is so obviously a revelation. So why do we have to be reminded of Bartolomeo Cristofori's name? After all, there must be a reason pianos aren't called Cristoforis.<br /> We may know so little about Cristofori because he was just a hired hand (albeit a well-respected one). As an employee of Ferdinando de' Medici, an Italian prince and member of the famous Italian family, Cristofori was hired to serve the court, not music alone.<br /> <br /> As an employee of the Medicis, Cristofori was a cog in a royal machine. Though he was earnestly recruited to work for the Medicis, he was initially shoved into a workspace with about 100 other artisans (he complained about how loud it was). Ferdinando de' Medici encouraged Cristofori to innovate, but the inventor was also tasked with tuning and moving instruments, as well as restoring some old ones. Unlike musicians, who circulated royal courts and could become famous far beyond their borders, Cristofori was a local commodity. The royal family gave him a house to work in, space to experiment, and, eventually, his own workshop and a couple of assistants. As the wealth of the Medicis declined, Cristofori did sell some pianos on his own, but he didn't possess anything like a modern patent — other people were free to sell their own improvements on the instrument. He remained in the court until his death in 1731.<br /> <br /> The piano's relatively slow adoption may have stolen Cristofori's credit, as well. Even if an invention went "viral" in the 18th century, it still had to travel at a glacial 18th-century pace. Queen Maria Barbara de Braganza purchased five pianos of Cristofori's design, and after that the instrument slowly spread in elite circles. There were early objections to the piano — Johann Sebastian Bach thought it could use some tweaks — and even Mozart, born in 1756, played the harpsichord as a child. It probably lessened Cristofori's fame that his invention took 100 years to truly oust the harpsichord from elite musical circles.<br /> <br /> Finally, there were a lot of improvements to the piano, and those improvements were crucial to its success. Organ builder Gottfried Silbermann added a sustain pedal, and he also boosted sales of the piano. Other inventors added materials better suited to the piano's unique abilities. Finally, composers eventually came around to the piano, which helped it replace the harpsichord as the premier musical instrument.<br /> <br /> Though Cristofori was clearly the inventor of the piano, it's less clear exactly why he's forgotten outside of musical circles. It may be a combination of his employment, the piano's slow adoption, and the subsequent improvements. He wasn't famous when he was alive — that's the reason we only have one portrait of him — and he isn't particularly famous today. But in a way, that nuance is appropriate for an inventor who introduced new shades of sound to music. The film’s Friday-to-Friday drop was slightly higher than the 69% second Friday drop for Fast Five but slightly ahead of the 72.3% Friday drop for Fast & Furious 6 back in 2013. Random chance and all aside, the film’s second Friday was nearly double the $10m second Fridays of the last two installments, and the film soared over the $200m domestic mark on its eighth day, becoming on of fifteen films to do so in that many days or less. Its eight-day $210.7m cume puts it at number nine on said list. Heck, in ten days it’ll have grossed more than any 2014 release save American Sniper, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Guardians of the Galaxy and will have the eighth-biggest ten day total of all time. At this rate, it will cross $300m next weekend and is going to make a real run at $400m, although falling a bit short is no defeat. For the record, its ten day total will probably be bigger than The Hunger Games ($248m) despite a slightly smaller opening weekend, and that first Katniss adventure snagged $409m by the time it was done.  In terms of worldwide box office, it crossed $500m on Wednesday and should flirt with $700m worldwide by the end of tomorrow.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> Yes, Avengers: Age of Ultron will start its global launch on April 22nd, but it won’t open in America until May 1st. At this point, the fact that the Avengers 2 review embargo is set to hold until after Furious 7‘s third weekend (April 21st at 2:00pm, although I may wait until the next morning to avoid the clutter) seems like a gift from Walt Disney to Universal/Comcast Corp., as it will allow Furious 7 to still dominate the conversation for another weekend. There isn’t much more to say until tomorrow when the weekend figures come in, but yes Furious 7 is indeed playing both fast and furious here and abroad. It is little wonder James Wan, who took over from Justin Lin and had to finish the film without his lead actor, is at the top of the Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc. wish-list for Aquaman. The film is set to run the tables for the next two weekends, which is of course the advantage of a late spring opening as opposed to a crowded summer slot. Two, groan and think aloud — couldn’t they think of one new dialogue because, you know, it is a new film, innit? Or is it just Farah Khan, reuniting with her old friend turned foe (via a very public feud fought in the tabloids) turned friend again, reprising her number — paying tribute to the ’70s Bollywood masala movie, only bigger and more blindingly brighter than ever?<br /> <br /> Happy New Year turns out to be a cross between an Oceans 11/12 and Flashdance and a whole bunch of movies that topline Mera Bharat Mahan sentiments. And a film which threatens to sink because it begins with such an eye glaze, but manages to rescue itself because of Farah’s relentless take-no-prisoners attitude: where it can get big, make it gigantic; where it can get colourful, stuff in every single primary colour, and turn the spotlight on. She pulls it off, but only just.<br /> <br /> And only after giving us long patches when you are left clutching your head. All that self-referential humour can get heavy. To call your bar dancing leading lady Mohini? Of course, you will flash back to Madhuri in Tezaab, as you are meant to. To call a safe-filled-with-diamonds Shalimar? Right, we get it. There are a bunch of others, but we’ll let you do a spot-the-ref by yourself, when you can see the film from the noise. And I’m warning you, the decibels are in the range of high-higher-highest.<br /> <br /> At nearly three hours, Happy New Year is a long showreel of what Khan the director and Khan the superstar can do, which is this: put on display rippling eight (or is it 12?) packs whenever you get the chance (which is often), bung in a song-and-dance whenever possible (also often), and when there is a gap, shove in some dialogue-and-action. And when all else fails, rev up the patriotic fervor, because we all love our India, right?<br /> <br /> The plot, such as there is, involves a bad diamond merchant (Shroff), a good safe-maker (Kher), the good safe-maker’s son Charlie(Shah Rukh), an expert safe-cracker (Irani), an ex-Army man who likes blowing things up (Sood, whose impressive eight packs sometimes get a chance to out-glisten the Khan’s ), a tapori who likes barfing (Bachchan; err, barfing? Don’t ask), a young hacker (Shah, mandatory accessory for a film like this), and the aforementioned bar dancer (Padukone, leggy and lithe and bright-eyed ).<br /> <br /> The theme is revenge twinned with romance and tragedy and comedy, leavened with dollops of stereotypes: gay people have to mince, right? And it is played out in huge explanatory chunks ( because we are all kids at heart, and it is good to keep everything simple, right?). And in dance competitions in Mumbai and Dubai, and in tunnels that lead to a safe that no one crack, except, of course, our heroes.<br /> And especially our hero, Shah Rukh, whose eight packs achieve the status of a separate character, given the amount of footage they get. In other places, Khan is his usual self-deprecating cool self, and cracks a couple of good jokes: one cuts close to the political bone. But it is also a performance that feels a trifle frayed, because he has nothing substantially new to do.<br /> <br /> And that is the problem with Happy New Year. Every where you turn, you find a scene, a line, a sequence that is familiar, from Farah’s own Main Hoon Na (we will win, us India-waaley, of course we will) and Om Shanti Om (SRK’s “entry” in Happy New Year may have him rolling in mud, but it still fetishises him, just as it did in Om Shanti Om: ooh, look how ripped he is), and all the others it borrows from.<br /> <br /> Deepika Padukone is the one that manages to stand out a little, and that could be because there is no other female competition. It helps that she is an excellent dancer, and has grown by leaps and bounds, both in the moving-and-acting departments, from her first film ‘Om Shanti Om’, in which she starred opposite SRK. A few riffs in the song-and-dance numbers remind you of Farah’s original talent as a choreographer, and Padukone is twinkly-toed enough, most times, to keep slackness momentarily at bay. As is Shah Rukh’s sexy-weary schtick, when it gets a chance to come to the fore.<br /> <br /> But, as I said, it’s only just. Too often we are left struggling against ennui — of having seen it, and heard it, before. How long can you keep the whole tribute thing going and still make it feel fresh? How much send up is too much?<br /> <br /> Can Shah Rukh Khan break free of having to resort to so much self-referencing? In a film that presents him as a completely new character? As, heck, a character?
