WhatsApp's new Material Design interface for Android

Earlier today, reports surfaced claiming that the next WhatsApp update for Android would bring an overhaul in design, essentially adding Material Design. The update hasn’t been rolled out via OTA yet, but you can download the APK. We’ve been using the new and improved WhatsApp on our Android smartphone for some hours and here’s our take on the new interface.

Ditching its old archaic design, WhatsApp decided to get with the Lollipop hype and embrace Google’s Material Design. Google’s new design interface has been receiving novel praise from tech enthusiasts and critics alike. WhatsApp has clearly taken liking to it as well and has embraced the interface elements on its Android app. The upfront noticeable changes are a cleaner design with a different font style, and a brighter green color.

The app is still divided into three sections namely calls, contacts and chats. The graphical improvements are evident in the attachment drop-down and the profile picture page. The attachment drop-down lets go of the black background with small square logos of gallery, photos, video, audio, location and contact. Instead, the Material Design’s round structure for all the logos take over with a simple white background. The drop-down is also much larger with more space between each option. The attachment menu takes up more space on the chat screen than the previous one but it looks much cleaner.

Moving on to the profile page, the biggest change is that there is no separate window to open the profile picture. Once you click on the person’s name on top while chatting, you are transferred to a single window with a rectangular cropped version of your profile photo (which looks very similar to Facebook’s cover photo), your status message and your number. If you want to look at the full profile photo, all you need to do is drag it below to expose the whole picture. The new profile page is really impressive as it does not compartmentalize the picture and status info into separate pages, but manages to keep it in window, keeping it neat and simple.

The essence of WhatsApp’s functionality remains the same, except that all those Android users who still do not have WhatsApp Call, will now surely get it with this new update. The new Material Design elevates the whole look of the app, making it look more modern, orderly and organized. It works on the principle ‘less is more’ and we hope WhatsApp brings many such clean iterations to the app. Let us know what you think below!
