Apple  released new version of its 15-inch MacBook Pro and iMac on Tuesday

Even though most of the hype centers around its mobile products, Apple doesn’t want people to forget it still makes plain old computers, too. The company on Tuesday released a revamped version of its 15-inch MacBook Pro and a new iMac.

The MacBook Pro (pictured) adds the new Force Touch trackpad, which uses so-called haptic feedback to simulate the sensation of a physical click. The Force Touch trackpad feature is making its mark on several items in Apple's MacBook line. The feature was introduced on the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the new, thinner MacBook. The 15-inch MacBook Pro also features increased processor speed. The 15-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,999.

New iMac

Apple also released a $1,999 version of its iMac with Retina 5K display. In doing so it lowered the price of its current 27-inch iMac by $200. The price of the top-end iMac with Retina 5K display is $2,299. All the new models are available on Apple's Web site.

"The response to the new MacBook and updated 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display has been amazing," said Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing. "Today we are thrilled to bring the new Force Touch trackpad, faster flash storage and longer battery life to the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display."

Accounting for almost 70 percent of the company’s sales, the iPhone is Apple's biggest moneymaker. Still, the iMac desktop and MacBook notebooks are the company's second-biggest revenue drivers, making up about 10 percent of sales last quarter -- ahead of the iPad's 9.4 percent.

Faster and Flashier

According to Apple, the new MacBook Pro has flash storage that's 2.5 times faster than that on the previous version. It also gets an additional hour of battery life, for a total of nine hours of wireless Web browsing and up to nine hours of movie playback via iTunes. The MacBook’s new graphics chip is the Radeon R9 M370X made by Advanced Micro Devices. It replaces the Nvidia GeForce GT 750M. AMD's chip is able render 3D images or run video-editing programs about 80 percent faster, according to Apple.

The iMac builds on the Retina 5K display introduced last year. The new model’s big selling point is a new super-high-resolution display. It has a 3.3 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with Turbo Boost Speeds of up to 3.7 GHz. In addition to the Intel Core i5 system, the new iMac comes with an AMD Radeon R9 M290 graphics processor. The AMD is a 22-nanometer Haswell part, the same as the one that powers the higher-end 5K iMacs.

The new iMac includes 8 GB of memory and 1 TB of storage, four USB 3.0 ports and two Thunderbolt 2 ports. The higher-end iMac has a 3.5 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with Turbo Boost Speeds of up to 3.9 GHz, along with a 1 TB fusion drive that combines flash memory with a traditional hard disk drive. Photos for OS X, iMovie, GarageBand, and iWork come free with every new Mac.
